The South Melbourne Districts women beat Fitzroy FC convincingly at home
It was a sunny May morning with the Bloods excited about playing at home on Clarke Sheilds Day. The development team had their first game on oval 12 ahead of the senior girls on the Ajax field.
The girls had a great warm up and looked to be in fine form. Within seconds of the first ball up captain Breeza had cleared the ball out of the center and kicked it to gun small forward and all rounder Danni M who slotted it through for a goal in under 30 seconds. The other team looked a little shaken due to the quick start, with midfielders Lauren and Smooth Criminal Chris covering all space on the field.
The rest of the quarter saw the ball spending most of it's time in South Melbourne's forward 50, with the girls showing everyone how it's done when building the wall, kicking another 4 points.
Dusty (Bridge) scored the second goal of the half, showing off her Dustin Martin like skills in the midfield and taking on players up forward.
The Bloods went into the half time break up 19-0, proving that although they may need to work on kicking straight (having kicked 2 goals and 7 behinds) their attack on the ball was putting a stop to Fitzroy scoring at all.
Having a bird poo on her head on her way to the game really proved to pay off for Eden, who took a couple of great marks and made great space down forward, kicking a fine goal in the second half.
Erin and Jess had stepped into ruck after a disappointing injury left Taya on the sidelines in a moon boot post last weeks game, with Jess also slotting a quick goal.
Mini Champs (Lana) scored a superb goal midway through the second term, so superb in fact that Henny could be heard yelling her approval from Fullback all over the field.
The forward line proved too strong for Fitzroy in the last quarter, with South Melbourne scoring 4 goals. Bahati kicked a ripper goal, and showed everyone how to give of a quick lateral handball.
Meg's dad appeared highly impressed as our goal umpire in the last quarter and Amanda proved to Hibbo that she is in fact 'big bad and bustling' with a great performance and goal down in full forward in the last quarter, to secure a 55-01 victory to the red and the white.
Luckily it seemed many of the girls had practiced the song, as the change rooms erupted in celebration, with all first gamers from both teams circled by the other players, supports and coaching staff. Well done girls !! And thanks to all who came to support, volunteer their time and cheer on the team.
