OUR BRAND NEW NETS…THE LATEST NEWSOctober 30

nets1nets2 As reported earlier in the month, our brand new nets are taking shape near our Clarke Shields Pavilion….that is, the area at the other end of Oval 11.

As you can see in these photos, the concrete has been poured and the wooden separators are in place. If you go and have a look at it, you will be able to see how impressive these nets are going to be. They are going to be amongst the very best nets in Melbourne.

As soon as they are finished we will move our training sessions from the MPCC nets at Oval 20 to these nets.

We will let you know when they are ready.

GET TO KNOW OUR CLUB VOLUNTEERS... ALLEN HART October 24

« Allen and Lorraine Hart

Allen Hart is coaching our Under12B Team this year. Here are some ‘tell all’ facts about Allen which just goes to show you how lucky this Club is to have such volunteers.

Father of: Lachlan (11), Corey (8) and Alistair (6)

Greatest moment in cricket when he was Under 12: I’m embarrassed to admit I did not start playing cricket as a child until U14’s & unfortunately there were not too many highlights when I did, I was terrible.

Greatest moment in cricket ever: After retiring at ripe old age of 16 I returned to my childhood cricket club at age 35 to recommence my career with my childhood friends. I had 3 years with the guys which was great fun.

Sporting (any sport) highlight in life: Both my wife Lorraine and I currently represent Australia in field hockey at the Masters level (that means really old level), which again is great fun & the fulfilment of a lifetime dream.

Favourite sportsman and why: As a sports fanatic I love most sports & their respective champions. I really admire sportspeople that achieve great things against the odds – from Kieran Perkins & Lance Armstrong, to the Socceroos and their titanic efforts at the recent world cup. Their achievements to me are significantly sweeter than say a Chelsea soccer club (EPL) that spent millions of dollars buying success.

Best tip to a young cricketer: Be patient, persistent, try always hard & have fun. It seems everyone has to be a champion by aged 12 these days. Take your time to get all of the basics right & don’t worry if you are not the best in your team right now, it’s amazing how lucky persistent people seem to be. Remember there aren’t too many 12/14 year olds playing in Australia’s test team at present.

SOUTH MELBOURNE PLAYERS REPRESENTING THE CLUBOctober 20

We are thrilled to announce that a large number of our boys have made a real impact at Representative level already by either qualifying for Representative Squads or being invited to take part in squad try outs.

This week, Cricket Victoria announced that after a couple of very competitive tryout sessions, John Holdsworth, Jack O’Sullivan and Lachlan Baker have made it into the Seagulls Under 16s Dowling Squad. These young men will go on to be involved in a couple of trial matches into November before the final squad is announced.

It is quite outstanding to have 3 players achieve such recognition at this level. It is also well deserved recognition for all the hard work these players have put in.

A further 4 players are involved in tryouts for the Under 14s Seagulls over the next 2 weeks. Congratulations to Jack Gavin, Jackson Bennett, Will Gilmour and Jack Kelly for being invited to try out. We wish you all well and look forward to reporting on your progress.

Two players, Patrick Garschagen and Jack Kelly were invited and took part in the Seagulls Under 13s Talent Squad Development Programme. This involved three days of intensive coaching and trial matches in the last school holidays.

Finally, and by no means least, we are very proud of Tom Kittson and Harry Christie who have been training with the Mitchell Shield Squad throughout the winter. Apart from the well deserved recognition of their outstanding talents, these boys have had the wonderful opportunity to develop their game. They have represented the Club with great distinction already and we know they will continue to do so in the future.

As a Club, we are great encouragers of boys being involved in tryouts at all levels. The lessons they learn, the friendships they develop are priceless. We are always looking out for boys who will benefit from being put forward for involvement in the many cricket Pathways available.

Frequently, in the early days, it is the boys’ schools that are contacted to put forward candidates for squad tryouts. In many cases, the schools, however well meaning, are not always aware of the specific boys capabilities and qualities.

This Club is committed to assisting schools make selections for tryouts, if both the boys and parents are keen and willing.Parents are most welcome to contact and discuss such opportunities with any of the Under 12s Coordinator, Alan Marshall, the Club Secretary, Bryce Anderson or the Junior President, Chris Garschagen. Contact numbers are listed on this website.

WEEKLY NEWSLETTER October 10

As always, weekly newsletters will be posted on this website. We will try to have them up on the site by Tuesday evenings. These newsletters are a must for players wishing to review and relive their own team’s brilliance after the weekend’s best efforts. The week’s training arrangements and the next immediate fixture will feature as per usual. However, the Committee have decided that in order to contain printing costs (we used to get it done for free) we will no longer issue hard copies to players at weekly training sessions. Considering almost everybody has got internet access, we feel that this is a more efficient way of communicating weekly highlights. We will of course make exception for anybody that does not have internet access – we have a small number of parents identified and we will make sure that they do not miss out.
