Our brilliant ‘Harmony in Cricket’ Day; …and still we thrash the Barmy Army Luminaries included Paul McNamara, President of Middle Park CC (4th from left), and Bryce Anderson, Secretary of the South Melbourne Junior Cricket Club (sitting in a most relaxed position on ground on the left)
December 20
What a great day it was when the Barmy Army called in for the traditional Middle Park/South Melbourne Cricket Club’s pre-Ashes Boxing Day cricket match at Albert Park today.
In support of Cricket Victoria’s “Harmony in Cricket’ initiative the legends of both teams battled through 30 overs each for the bragging honours of being the greater contributors to the cause. And truly, everybody was a winner.
Middle Park CC (our alliance senior Cricket Club) donated $1,000 from refreshment takings to the Barmy Army charities, our Junior Cricket Club ran the ‘BBQ tent’ and generated just as much for our junior ‘bursary’ players who contribute so much to what we are, an all encompassing community Club.
Whilst the Sunday Age pre-warned Melburnians about the game, Channel 7 featured the event on its 6 o’clock news and Harmony Orange, worn by all players and BBQ tent attendants was everywhere.
A better example of warmth and friendship through cricket could hardly be imagined. The fun loving Poms and the easy going locals could not have displayed the spirit any better …..until, it got to the cricket. That was fiercesome and we are delighted to record that we took out the honours this time.
Thank you to all players, volunteers, supporters and spectators for making this a “Cricket in Harmony” Day to remember. Special thanks to Middle Park CC for organising it and making us a part of it.
Kosta Tzioras and Patrick Garschagen
make the Caulfield CC 2006/07 Under 15s Hatch Squad December 24
«Proof that Kosta (number 10) and Patrick (with the ball) were team mates at South Melbourne Districts when they were Under 8s!
Kosta Tzioras and Patrick Garschagen (currently both playing for the U14A Twilight Team) have both just been selected for the Caulfield CC Under 15s Hatch Squad. That means that they should be seeing quite a lot of cricket action in January.
As you can see, these boys have been South Melbourne stalwarts and team mates since they were eight.Well done boys. You have both worked hard for your recognition and both richly deserve it. Have a great time in January.
Our new nets. We are up and running!!!
December 20
At last, our new nets are up and running. The Cathedral is ready!
On Wednesday, Alan Marshall gave the Under 12s gave their first serious work out and what a success. These have to be the best cricket nets in Melbourne. Drop in and have a look. These are unquestionably ‘State of the Art’ nets.
From now on, these will be our new training facilities. We will let everybody know what is happening as soon as we return from holidays.
Special thanks are due to Parks Victoria for making this happen for the South Melbourne Junior Cricket Club. Thanks are also due to Noel Jones, one of our cricket club founders for negotiating, encouraging and delivering these outstanding Club facilities.

« Mark Sheppard, our ‘Milo Have a Go’ Cricket Leader and his two sons,
Leo and Billy having a go!
Mark Sheppard leads our important ‘Milo Have a Go’ cricket programme. This is the second year that Mark has run this programme with the active support of many parents. ‘Milo Have a Go’ cricket is not only the most fun you can have, it is the absolute life-blood of the South Melbourne Junior Cricket Club and a direct pathway to the Australian Test team!
Dad of: Billy and Leo
Greatest moment in cricket when he was Under 12: The Kiwis (my team) beating those cocky Aussies from over the ditch in a test series …It didn’t have to involve me did it? (PS—It’s ok, I’m a fully-fledged Aussie supporter now!)
Greatest moment in cricket ever: Taking a hat-trick in schoolyard cricket. I think I bowled a couple and got one caught. I had no idea how to hold the ball, but it probably didn’t matter as I think it was a tennis ball and we were playing on a basketball court.
Sporting (any sport) highlight in life: Winning the 100m at school when I was about 10. All downhill since then, as everybody else grew and I didn’t! But I still kept enjoying any sport I could get involved in.
Favourite sportsman and why: Adam Gilchrist, because he never lets the desire to win detract from his commitment to honesty and simply enjoying his cricket. And Dan Carter (All Blacks’ Flyhalf) because he’s just so good! (Had to get the kiwis back in there somehow!)
Best tip to a young cricketer: Just put your all into it and keep it fun!
CONGRATULATIONS TO LACHLAN BAKER, JACK O'SULLIVAN & JACKSON BENNETTDecember 20
Congratulations to Lachlan Baker and Jack O'Sullivan on being selected for the Elsternwick under 15 Hatch team again this year. Also to Jackson Bennett for his selection for the Williamstown Hatch team.
These boys have been outstanding cricketers for our club and at representative level and show real promise for higher honours in the future. We are very proud of their achievements and wish them all the very best with their Hatch matches in January 2007.
JACK GAVIN AND WIL GILMOUR,
OUR NEW UNDER 14s SOUTH EAST SEAGULLS REPRESENTATIVES….
December 9
« Under14A Twilight team mates, Jack Gavin and Wil Gilmour
Jack Gavin and Wil Gilmour have made the Club proud by being selected in the very talented Under 14s South East Seagulls squad for the State Championships in January 2007. In a select squad of 13, we are thrilled to be providing two outstanding young cricketers.
Beyond their obvious skills (obvious to all of us who have had the pleasure of watching them play this season) these young men represent an admirable cricketing work ethic. Whilst we know that they work hard on developing their technical skills, we can also see that they prepare themselves methodically for each match and pay attention to the important detail they can control. Most important of all, they are great team players and leaders, always lifting and encouraging their team mates.
Well done Jack and Wil. You are wonderful examples to every cricketing aspirant in the Club. We are proud of you and wish you both good luck and great fun in January.
More news as it comes to hand.
OUR BRAND NEW NETS… Progress Report
December 05
Our new nets, surely to be called ‘the cathedral’, are still being built.
We had hoped to have it up and running before the beginning of this season. Once work started in October, we were sure that it would be completed quickly. Progress may have been slow, but we can at least say it is sure.
Take a look at the latest picture of ‘the cathedral’ and you can see that it really will be a ‘State of the Art’ facility. It will be able to be locked up when not in use, and of course, it is designed exclusively for South Melbourne Junior Cricket Club players.
More news as it comes to hand.
