Rob Quiney amongst a group of delighted Under 14 players (More pics below)

What a wrap up for the Under 14s and Under 16s. It was a night to remember as we celebrated the efforts of all our boys in the Friday Twilight competitions. We may not have struck ‘finals gold’ on the field this season but we certainly made up for it with a brilliant send off.

We were thrilled to have Rob Quiney (St Kilda CC, Victorian Bushranger and Australian 20/20 squad member) join us and talk to us about his progress through the CMCA to District cricket to English village cricket to key Victorian Bushranger status. Indeed, joining us fresh after completion of play on Day 1 of the Sheffield Shield Final at the Junction Oval he highlighted that success in cricket was all about hard work and commitment as well as some healthy good fortune. Make it happen for yourself, back yourself and make sure you are having fun playing cricket were the key themes of his talk.

All junior players (and many parents) were enthralled with his talk and delighted that he chose to stay on and present awards and have pictures taken with the boys. The attached photos are testament to the inspiration and sheer joy he gave our junior players.

As we moved to the Under 16s, we were equally delighted to welcome Paul McNamara, President of our senior alliance Club, Middle Park CC who congratulated the many boys that played senior cricket this year for the first time. Mark van der Meer, captain of the 4th XI, presented greatly appreciated Participation Certificates and spoke passionately about the excitement of seeing our players contribute so effectively in their respective games. Bill Belbin, a tireless initiator and active supporter of this important alliance was also on hand to celebrate.

The Club owes many people gratitude, not least David Johnstone, Development Manager of St Kilda CC who offered the Club a great deal of support and always delivered on his promise.

The South Melbourne Junior Cricket Club is the richer for these associations having one intent alone. That is to provide all of our players with real options to continue their cricket beyond our Under 16 offering.

Tonight we saw enough reason to realise what a delightful social passport cricket provides. We saw the very best of the game in our own clubrooms.

On behalf of all the players, thank you for making it a special evening.
