Get to know our Club Volunteers...... NOEL JONES «Noel Jones with a group of young South Melbourne cricketers training
at the Club’s new nets on Oval 11.
Noel Jones can only be described as an icon of the Club. For those of us that have had the pleasure of meeting and working with him know that the generosity of time and spirit Noel mentions he learnt from his Mum (see below) has been afforded unconditionally to everybody at the Club. Noel is but 1 of the 50,000 cricket volunteers that Cricket Victoria refers to in its Annual Report…..volunteers who are rightfully acclaimed for literally making cricket happen for young people in this State.
Noel was the instigator of cricket at the South Melbourne Districts Sports Club by initiating and running the Milo ‘Have a Go’ programme 11 years ago. To this day, recognising the importance of the programme as a feeder for the Club, he, with Mark Sheppard, is still involved in organising and promoting the programme. As an active Committee Member of the Sports Club, no person has lobbied harder for any cause or aspect that could improve our Club. Noel has been central to securing the outstanding facilities that the cricket club now enjoys. He has also batted hard for issues such as reduced Albert Park parking conditions for Club members ($10 per year) that many might have just allowed to go through to the wicket keeper.
Throughout, Noel has quietly supported his son Kieran through each and every match day as every Dad loves to. This season alone, approximately 200 children and many more parents owe Noel their gratitude for ‘creating the dream’ for so many. Noel should look back in pride at 11 years of voluntary contribution that has played an important part in providing immeasurable but wonderful hours of constructive and inspiring cricket for many children at our Club.
Noel….thank you on behalf of every child that has ever benefited from playing cricket at this Club.
Dad of: Kieran Jones (Under16As)
Greatest moment at South Melbourne District: Seeing the growth of junior cricket since 1998 when I started the Milo ‘Have a Go’ programme and watching the boys who started as 7 and 8 year olds become fine young men
Why I do what I do for South Melbourne District: I think I have been a good organiser and have been able to enlist the support of so many parents who have provided a strong and vibrant club. The establishment of the indoor bowling machine at Shed 5 and the erection of the new practice nets at Oval 11 are certainly highlights together with the number of boys who have made representative sides.
Sporting (any sport) highlight in life: Playing senior football for Hamilton Imperials and being the leading goal kicker in my first year. Unfortunately 4 games in to my second year I injured my knee badly and was never able to play again. I was 40 when they were able to do a reconstruction and it enabled me to get back into sport, tennis and golf – a golfing highlight, a hole in one at the National
The most incredible person I have met and why: My mum. She was a wonderful person, warm hearted, generous, a great sense of humor and the way she lived and cared for others set an example for me and my siblings how to live. My father was sick for a long time and mum worked tirelessly to give us all a good education. One thing my father kept telling me was that if something is worth doing it is worth doing well and I have always tried to do that.
Favourite sportsperson and why: Ron Barassi. He was my favorite player and when I came to Melbourne and was able to see a game, I marvelled at the determination he had and how he would never give up. Without being the most gifted player he was inspirational carrying this through to his coaching. Since retirement he continues to set a good example. I have also always admired how he looks for a better way to do things and looks forward in life rather than dwelling on the past, an attitude that I have endeavored to follow
Best tip to a young cricketer: Set yourself some targets and work hard to achieve them. Success is achieving your own targets and not what others set or may want you to do. Practice is important. Enjoy what you are doing and enjoy the company of your teammates as you will build friendships that will last for life.
Get to know our Club Volunteers...... Kerry Boulton (Holdsworth) Kerry Boulton is a living legend at the Club. As many will know, Kerry is every where. Whether it be manning the coffee stand on cold winter footy boundaries, organising sausage sizzles or Gala Dinners for the Club, representing young players best interests in the Club Committee Rooms or just being a supporting cricket mother on the sidelines, few have given the Club as much as Kerry.
Kerry has been involved with the SMDSC for 10 years and together with Noel Jones, founded/created the Junior Cricket Club through the Milo ‘Have a Go’ programme. She has represented junior cricket’s interests in the Committee Room, most recently as the Club Secretary (last 3 years). This year (her last active year with us) Kerry has jointly team managed the TwilightU16As with Noel.
Please read Kerry’s candid and touching own words that follow. This Club has been privileged to have Kerry as a leading example of voluntary contribution. Kerry was recognised by Cricket Victoria in 2006 by invitation to the Volunteers’ Breakfast on the 3rd Day of the Ashes Test, and few people in our community deserve greater recognition.
Every Club player that has had the opportunity to reach their individual potential at this Club and/or enjoyed the sheer pleasure of playing a team sport with a wonderful group of cricketing mates owes Kerry’s voluntary efforts everything.
On behalf of all children and parents at this Club, thank you Kerry for your selfless commitment and incredible work.
Mum of: John Holdsworth (Under16As)
Greatest moment at South Melbourne District:
When the Sydney Swans came to Oval 11 after they had just won the 2005 AFL Grand Final. The ground was packed – so many people came – and we made over $3,000 from our BBQ, which almost paid for our new bowling machine. We had 44 people volunteer to help out that day, mostly from cricket and it was sensational.
Why I do what I do for South Melbourne District:
I’m a masochist! No, not really. It’s just one of those things in life. When we’re younger and in our teens, 20s and 30s, we’re generally taking everything we can get from life. As I’ve reached the more mature years, I’ve really felt it’s time to give back to life and the community at large. What better way than through our local sports club with the kids, I just love watching them grow up and having fun playing their cricket and footy.
Sporting (any sport) highlight in life:
My mother winning silver medals in the NSW State Swimming Championships when she was a girl. Although I grew up without really knowing her (she died when I was only 4) I still cherish those medals. For me personally, just being the best that I could be at anything – I played Hockey, Softball & Netball at District level as a teenager. Then making a living got in the way!
The most incredible person I have met and why:
John Bowen – a self-made man who was a tremendous friend and surrogate father to me (my dad also died when I was 15). John was a quiet high achiever in business and in life, with great humility. He knew how to really enjoy life. His family were great supporters and he made friends with many people whom he admired. These qualities in a human being are quite rare and to be greatly admired. John passed away in January 2007 at 76 years of age, having fought prostate cancer for almost six years. His funeral was testimony to his legacy in business and in life, with over 500 people crowding into the church. I hope I can emulate some of his qualities.
Favourite sportsperson and why:
Steve Waugh. His leadership of the Australian Cricket Team was legendary. He knew how to rally the team to pull together to be this country’s most successful cricket team – ever. When he had a slump in form, he knew how to get himself back up. He never gave up. He always gave everything he had, regardless of how he was feeling or what others thought. He showed what it takes to be mentally tough, no matter what was going on around you. That’s what I admire.
Best tip to a young cricketer:
Be the best you can be, always. Never give up, keep practising, training consistently. Be alert to and take every opportunity you can – no matter how you may be feeling – you’ll be amazed at how much you’ll enjoy your successes. |
